Potty Training - Its All in the Timing

A big question that plagues most parents, is how to know when your child is ready to be potty trained. If you get it wrong you could easily be setting yourself up for failure.

With that in mind when should you start potty training your child?

For the best results your child should be about 18 months or older to start potty training. Avoid starting earlier than this because most children won' be ready yet. This will keep you from running into complications and getting frustrated which will make the process take much longer.

There are some signs to look for that will let you know your child is ready to start potty training. A few of these are listed here:

Bladder control: Your child has a dry diaper a couple of hours after their last diaper change, or they often wake up from a daytime nap with a dry diaper. However, bladder control may not be readily apparent in some children. A child may have the capacity for bladder control but still pee in their diaper because there isn't any consequence in doing so! For that reason this sign does not necessarily have to be observed, but it is a very positive sign if displayed.

Bowel control: If your child shows signs of concentration, or telltale action that they have a "dirty" diaper.

* Co-ordination: Your child is able to pull their pants and underpants up and down.

* Concentration: Your child can remain occupied with an activity for ten minutes or longer.

* Understanding: Your child can follow simple instructions such as picking up a toy. Also, they should be able to understands words such as pee, poo, potty, dry, wet, etc.

If your child shows all of the above signs, then they are ready to be potty trained.
