This is an unusual gift, mostly because no one thinks of it. After all, the baby cannot read yet! Studies confirm, however, that reading to a newborn can trigger brain activity. Aim for colorful, tough books that have textures or moving parts. A nice touch can be to include some books for the parents, including a book or article on the benefits of reading to a newborn. It's a fun, and usually affordable, gift to give.
Baby Bath Gift Basket
I know, you really want to shop for tiny newborn clothes, soft blankets, and toys. It is fun, which is these are popular shower gifts. Go for the unexpected though, and get the parents something they can use every day. You can get a baby bath (a basic one is just fine, that is all they will really need). Fill it with bath items like wash rag hand puppets, lotions, aromatherapy baby shampoo, and soft towels. Put a bow on top and you can present a beautiful and truly useful gift.
Quality Diaper Pail
Again, this falls into the not-fun-to-buy group. But I cannot think of anything more needed than a quality diaper pail. If you go this route, do not skimp. Get one that seals properly, and one that can be opened without using your hands. If your budget allows, fill it with newborn diapers, trash bags that fit the pail, baby wipes, powder, and diaper rash cream. This gift may not get the crowd oohing and aahing, but it will be deeply valued by the parents, trust me.
Baby Bedding Collections
The big hit of my sister's baby shower was a girls baby bedding collection. Because they can be expensive though, you may consider it for a group gift where several people chip in. There are hundreds of designs out there. If you do not know the sex of the baby or prefer gender-neutral, look for themes like farm or jungle animals. They're typically printed in primary colors, or green, yellow, or beige tones.
A Thoughtful Gift Certificate
A lot of people shy away from a gift certificate because they are afraid it will say they do not care enough to shop for a 'real' gift. But there is a way to make a gift certificate extra special. Think about it: the focus is usually on the baby. Getting the mother a gift can make her feel very valued and cared about. Go for a gift certificate that focuses on something she loves, such as the coffee she can now drink, a spa treatment, or her favorite bath and body shop.

9 month old son leaks through all his diapers?
My 9 month old son is wearing size 4 diapers, which his doctor said is the correct size for his weight and height. He continually leaks through them. I use pampers during the day and Huggies Overnights at night and he still pees right through them. He always wake up wet in the morning. I don't know what else to do. Any suggestions? He usually leaks out from the top of the diaper.

First of all, make sure that his penis is pointing down. It took me a looong time to figure that out! Also, moving up a size can help, because the larger sizes are designed to hold more. I have had very good luck with pampers cruisers with my son, they are flexible, yet snug, and they hold a LOT. Diaper sizes generally overlap a little too, so he might even fit into the lower end of the height/weight suggestions. Keep in mind that every baby is different, and just because the diapers say they fit babies who are x pounds, it doesn't mean they necessarily fit well on every baby who is that weight. If he is leaking a lot during the day, check his diaper more often. You can also try to avoid giving a lot of liquids close to bedtime, depending on his feeding schedule. That will help him to not pee as much during the night. Of course, if he doesn't sleep through the night, another option is to change him when he wakes up to eat.
